Welcome to
the 2011 – 2012 Lions Year.
I look
forward to this year with excitement and pride in what
the members of our great organisation do for our
communities, whether they are local, national or
international.
There are
many changes occurring this year which will see
improvement in the way that club reporting is done and
also an increase in the support and assistance provided
to clubs in regard to membership and leadership for both
the present and future.
This
together with looking at the Visions our new
International President Wing-Kun Tam has for this year
will most definitely stand Lions Clubs International in
good stead for the future.
President
Tam’s vision for the year covers 4 areas,
1.
Membership and Retention where he looks to
retaining our members that are leaving us and opening
new clubs whilst bringing in new members;
2.
Youth which covers many areas including Youth of
the Year, Peace Poster, Education, Music, Youth Exchange
& Camps just to name a few;
3.
Health including such areas as SightFirst,
Prostate Cancer, Children’s Cord Blood, Diabetes Testing
and the Measles Initiative;
4.
The Environment. where he encourages us all to
‘Go Green’ by challenging us all to collectively plant a
minimum of 1 million trees over the next 12 months to
ensure the health of our planet – which if every member
was to plant just 1 tree his challenge will be
successful with a result of 1.4 million trees!.
President
Tam believes that our philosophy should be ‘My Club, My
Family” because, as Lions we are part of a different
kind of family who shares a common belief of working
together to accomplish great things and help change the
world through service. As such we must value our members
as we do our family and by keeping members involved,
giving mutual respect and instilling pride, we will be
successful.
As Lions
we are ordinary people, doing extraordinary things, and
that as just one individual we can only do a little, but
when we join together as a team we can do so much more.
To ensure this continues we should look to the very
basis of our organisation, our club members, as without
members there is no organisation. We must ensure that
we have sufficient members to not only do the great work
that we are world renown of doing today, but also find
and nurture new members to ensure that we will be there
in the future to continue to do what we do best.
‘We Serve’.
Lastly, I
believe that if we put IP Tam’s philosophy together with
my personal theme is for this year,
Service – Fellowship – Fulfilment,
so that as
a team we serve our community and enjoy the fellowship
of one another we will then have a feeling of complete
fulfilment in what we are doing. This cannot help but
be reflected in how we come across to the community and
attract more community minded people into our clubs.
I look
forward to working with and for you and our community
over the coming year.
Yours in
Lionism
