Young people are becoming more than ever
involved in their community. How we communicate our message to them will help
them determine whether they choose to volunteer as Lions.
Contrary to popular belief, young people
don’t speak a different language. But they DO use a different mode of
communication. This is the generation of computers, iPhones, texting, instant
messaging and every means of social networking.
We have already started. LCI now has
Facebook, MySpace Twitter, an IPhone Application, our own YouTube channel and
Flicker; it is now up to us to inform the younger generation that these
facilities are available. Don’t know what those are? Find out! Have you ever
watched a podcast? Did you know many LCI’s videos are now podcast?
Our ability to interact with young people
goes beyond communicating. We need to engage them with programs they can relate
to, and encourage their input and participation.
Clubs have many ways to brighten young
lives. One of the best is to team with local schools or youth organisations. As
a school, your club might organise a Leo club, but be mindful let the students
take the lead!
You can also sponsor students in the “Youth
of the Year “program or the Youth Exchange program. What about sponsoring the
“Peace Poster” contest at your local school? Over 360,000 children aged 11 - 13
participated in the Peace Poster contest.
All these ideas are designed to help make
your club more relevant to your local community, but while achieving those
goals you and your fellow members must be enjoying your club and the service
that you provide.
