Lion Bernie Barron

Lions Club of Grafton

Bernie passed away on Saturday 19th July 2008.

VALE, LION BERNIE BARRON

Lion Bernie Barron excelled as a Lion in every aspect of his life. Since moving to Grafton over 37 years ago he was committed to servicing community needs and to helping others. Bernie worked tirelessly for the Grafton community as a Lion for over 38 years before moving to Grafton, previously in Toowoomba and Biderston Qld.; Virtually all of his working life Lion Bernie gave of himself to the community, some of his past roles and awards included:

  • Twice President of  The Lions Club of Grafton for 5 years, member for 38 years,

  • In 1981 Bernie was awarded the Grafton “Citizen of the Year”.

  • Award given by Lions International the “Melvin Jones Fellowship”

  • 2007 Bernie was Awarded the “Paul Harris Award” the highest Award given by Rotary.

  • 2009 Bernie was inducted into the “Lions Hall of Fame”, a well earned and deserved recognition for the hours of dedication and work that he did for others less fortunate than himself.

Bernie’s dedication and commitment to volunteer’s services and to worthy causes is an example to others. He was always available to lend a hand and to assist people in need every time. The word No was not in Bernie’s vocabulary. Helping raise funds for emergency appeals, people in need, such as a humidity crib, a birthing bed, patient chairs, Toys for the Children’s Ward and Renal equipment for the Grafton Base and Maclean Hospitals the list goes on and on. Bernie was the instigator of the first Wheelchair Taxi in Grafton, he personally sent two disadvantaged children from the Cowper Homes to Lake Keepit Camp each year. Organiser of the annual “Lions Youth of the Year Quest” his contribution to the community was wide spread and did not favour one group or organisation, he gave himself willingly and freely to assist those as and when required without question or thought. Bernie was a stalwart and a tireless worker for our community who will be sadly missed.

Other hats Bernie wore were:

  • Chairman of the Clarence Valley Transport Committee for 10 years

  • President of the Clarence Valley Club

  • Grafton Access committee member

  • Area Chairman of the National Heart Foundation

  • President of the Grafton Bowling Club

  • Patron of the Grafton Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club
