SECOND VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR, ALAN CUNNINGHAMAlan was born in South Melbourne and raised in the Carlton area, but in his teens relocated to Belgrave Victoria as this is where his step-father and mother operated the Red Mill Cafe. At 17 Alan joined the Army, his place of employment for the next 22 years. During this time he married is first wife Brenda, with whom he raised three children. Alan became a single father on the death of his wife in 1984. A few years later he met and married Maureen. On leaving the Army, Alan obtained employment with Cooper Tools and subsequently Spotlight before having to retire in 1996 due to ongoing medical issues. On retirement he sought a more active role in the community, involving himself in the local sub-branch of the RSL, taking on the role of a Palliative Care Volunteer and of course Lions International. As a member of the Howlong Club of which he became a member in 1996, Alan served as the President and the Youth of the Year Chairman along with other various positions. In 2002 Alan and Maureen relocated to Maclean and Alan transferred to the Maclean Lions Club. Since 2002, he has again become further involved in the community as a Palliative Care Volunteer and as a member of the Catering Brigade of the local Rural Fire Service. During his time with the Maclean Club he has been President, Youth of the Year Chairman, Christmas Cakes Chairman and the Club Secretary. In 2009 Alan was awarded the James D Richardson Honour Award by the Maclean Club. Alan was very pleased to be invited onto the 201N1 Cabinet where he has served as a Zone Chairman, Region MERL & PR Chairman, District Retention Chairman and currently is serving as a Region Chairman. On the more personal side, Alan is a strong supporter of the Swans and St George. He is also an avid reader and loves to travel and go caravanning with Maureen and to have time to spend with his family which now includes a very lively grandson. |
