MALCOLM MERRICK
DISTRICT GOVERNOR
201N1 2008 - 2009
 MALCOLM MERRICK—THE FAMILY MAN
Malcolm grew up in Lithgow and was educated at Lithgow High School. He left School when he gained his Intermediate Certificate.
He loved the bush and worked as a Timber Cutter and was a very talented Junior Axeman and was quite successful at many competitions in the Central West of NSW
He was called up for National Service in 1967 and went to Vietnam. In January 1968, the first day of the TET Offensive, he was critically wounded and spent the next 18 months in and out of Concord Repatriation hospital.
It was during this recovery period he met his wife Jeanette.  They have 4 children, three girls and a boy and one grandson.   Mal has another daughter and five grandchildren from a relationship many years ago.
MALCOLM MERRICK—THE BUSINESS MAN
After a period of recovery from his wounds, Malcolm re-entered the work force and became very successful in sales and by 1980 he had became the Sales Manager for STIHL Chainsaws in Northern NSW.
In 1985 he was transferred with Stihl to Tasmania where he also purchased a small property and ran a few sheep.
In 1989 Mal was appointed Sales Manager for HUSQVARNA Forest Products in Tasmania.
Unfortunately in the late 80’s the economic situation tightened  and most large companies, including Husqvarna,  pulled out of Tasmania . Undaunted by yet another barrier, Malcolm became a Tourist Coach Driver while Jeanette ran the farm and continued to work as a nurse.
In the early 90’s, ongoing problems with his was injuries forced Malcolm to leave full time work. They sold their property in Tasmania in 1996 and moved to Port Macquarie.
MALCOLM MERRICK—THE LION
With a membership spanning over 27 years, Malcolm has a wealth of knowledge and experience in Lionism .
He joined Lions as a member of the West Pennant Hills Lions Club in 1980 where he held the positions of Vice President twice, Tail Twister and President in 1983. Moving to Tasmania he transferred to the Lions Club of Perth, a small town 15km south of Launceston where he held the positions of Youth of Year Chairman, Director, Vice President four times, Tail twister & President in 1993
On moving to Port Macquarie in 1996 he joined as a Charter member, The Lions Club of Tacking Point where he has held the positions of Tail Twister, Vice President three times, Treasurer, Director, Bulletin Editor and President in 2003
Malcolm has been a member of the District 201N1 Cabinet for the past four years, two as Zone Chairman and Region Chairman.
INTERESTS
In his youth Mal was a very talented Junior Axeman and an interest in competitive wood chopping and axe man skills remains one of his passions.
He played junior Rugby League up until being conscripted into the army. But today along with most of us, he is an ’armchair” critic on all sport but loves to watch his beloved Swans do well.
Mal was the Tasmanian State Secretary for the Vietnam Veterans Association and maintains strong links with his ex-Vietnam buddies to this day.
In addition to Lions,  Mal serves his local community in many ways. He is a member of the Port Macquarie Australia Day Committee, the Cancer Council Relay for Life Committee and is very active in numerous other groups.
When he has the time Mal loves a social game of Golf ……….but using his own words…….”I play golf not for demonstrating any golfing skill but more for the fun and relaxation of being with friends.”
Mal and Jeanette have a Caravan and like nothing more than packing up and traveling. (Invariably they end up at some Lions function or meet up with some of the many friends that have made from Lions………..)
