CAMP DETAILS

The objectives of the program are to:

  • bring young people of different countries into meaningful contact with each other,

  • permit the sharing of ideals and cultural viewpoints,

  • promote international understanding and goodwill,

  • develop leadership potential in outstanding youth,

  • encourage respect in young people for the thinking of others, and

  • work towards the goals of world peace and human understanding.

Location

The District 201N3 Lions International Youth Camp is held at the Glenrock

Scout Camp, City of Lake Macquarie, about 12km from the centre of Newcastle and about 160km north of Sydney, NSW Australia. The surrounding land is a State Recreation Area that is partly in the city bounds of Lake Macquarie and partly in Newcastle.

The Camp has a golden sand beachfront facing east to the Tasman Sea in the South Pacific Ocean and a natural lagoon separated from the ocean by a narrow sandbar. The beachfront, grassed open space and tree covered valley give an impression of remoteness, as no buildings other than that of the camp can be seen - yet it is close to Australia's largest regional city.

The Hunter-Central Coast region located on the East coast of Australia in the State of New South Wales has a population of 650,000 and so contains many interesting features for overseas visitors. Among other things Newcastle is the largest coal port in the world, and the Hunter region produces world quality wines and livestock.

Sydney has Australia’s major airport, and an electric rail service connects the Sydney airport to Newcastle. Trains run at about one hour frequency.

Accommodation

Accommodation at the camp is in a building containing shared rooms (4 to 12 campers).  There is a large dining area, and lots of space for indoor activity. There are verandahs and outdoor spaces to enjoy the beach and bush views and soak up the sun

The beach is about 300m from the camp  buildings and is normally deserted so there is plenty of space for games and camp activity. Although it is winter in Australia, the water temperature is likely to be about 15oC.  Many Australians do surf all through the year, however this beach is not patrolled.

The camp is set on several hectares of extensive grass areas on the banks of a placid lagoon, again lots of space for outdoor sports and activity.  The camp site includes a bush chapel for those who would like some quiet time.

The surrounding bush is home to native wattle trees. In July, the time of the Camp, they come alive with a glorious display of golden flower against a background of green - the basis of Australia's national colours - green & gold.

Weather

July is winter in Australia, but as the Camp is at Latitude 32o, and right on the sea, the weather will be mild by international standards. Temperatures should range from about 3oC, at night and may climb to about 18o during the day. Days would normally be fine with perhaps an occasional wet day.  Sunset will be about 5:15pm and sunrise 6:45am. Cold breezes will keep temperatures low particularly at night.
