Why We Want You To Go Green - an initiative of the District

As part of an environmental initiative, the 201 V1-4 district initiated an opportunity for you to help reduce environmental pollution due to the production and waste of printed paper.

Paper, being manufactured from wood fibre input, comprises of 16% sawmill residue and 84% pulp log with 79% of pulp log sourced from public and private plantations and 21% sourced from native forests in 2003-2004. This averages out to be 3,800,000 tonnes of wood per year.

Production of paper in Australia requires a substantial amount of energy, historically about 51,000 Terajoules per year in 2003-2004 with only about 30.5% being from a renewable source like Black Liquor, Biomass or Hydro-electricity. The primary energy used are black coal, brown coal, natural gas, fuel oil and steam. The CO2 emissions from this equates to approximately 4,200,000 tonnes per year. The amount of greenhouse gas produced from the manufacture of 26 sheets of paper is the equivalent of driving your car for 1 km.

In 2001-2002, it was reported that 1 litre of water was used to produce 7 sheets of A4 paper. An average of 26.7 kilolitres of water per tonne of production was used in 2003-2004. Even more importantly, water is discharged by paper manufacturers that have solid waste and organic compounds.

Paper not recycled goes to landfill. In 2002-2003, approximately 290,000 tonnes of paper was disposed of to landfill which produces methane emissions during decomposition that results in further CO2 emissions. In 2004, this figure was 288,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.. In an average household, paper makes up of about 25% of the total waste.

The statistics were obtained by the following websites:

The newsletters are printed for approximately 1500 members in our district with 4 double sided sheets of paper, envelope, printing of newsletter, petrol in distribution of newsletters as well as 4 issues of the newsletter per year. With your assistance, we are taking a step to achieving a greener environment by deciding to reduce the distribution of printed newsletters.

We wish to thank you for your support in this initiative

Yours in Lionism, Sam Tung 2009-2010 Environmental Chairperson
