Children of Courage 13th April 2008

2007 Children of Courage

A very successful Children of Courage Day was held in the Memorial
hall Tocumwal on Sunday 13th April.

The Tocumwal Lions Club have catered for this Lions Project for the
past seven years in setting up the venue and providing a magnificent
afternoon tea for sometimes over 100 people.  This great effort is
appreciated by Lions District 201 V6.

The Children of Courage Awards were introduced into Australian in
1983 to recognise a very special group of young Australians and their
families.

Up until that time there were many awards that recognised the
achievements of young people, but children with ‘special needs’ were
not catered for.

The Children of Courage Awards are not a competition.  Every
recipient is a winner in his or her own right as the recognition of
these young people will:

  1. Act as an encouragement for their future
  2. Help them believe in themselves
  3. Help increase their self worth

Also, they are being accepted regardless of their special needs.
These awards portray them as children who have successfully
overcome additional barriers which face them in today’s world.

Since its inception into our District eight years ago, there have been
134 recipients of this award.

This years Awards for Children with Special Needs were presented to:

  • Thomas Webb
  • Karley Geddes
  • Morgan Collins
  • Jacob Brockley
  • Zoe Smith

Sponsored by the Corowa Lions Club.

  • Kahli Sargent
  • Sarah Bernaldo
  • Alannah Radley

Sponsored by the Lions Club of Echuca.

  • Olivia Cameron

Sponsored by the Berrigan Lions Club.

  • Faith Web

Sponsored by Lions Club of Albury.

  • Tammie Evans and Joshua Marengo

Sponsored by the Wangaratta Lions Club.
Well done Tocumwal Lions Club, and thank you.

Lions Youth Exchange

Lions Youth Exchange Program
Young people make many decisions through their lives but one decision Lions can help with is; Does six weeks in another country sound exciting? Yes and with our help the many young people who want to make this journey, can.  We as Lions have a great opportunity to encourage young people to take this step and allow them to enjoy another culture first hand by joining the many
students who take up this program each year.

Countries to visit include USA, Canada, UK, Scandinavia, Europe, Brazil, Japan and New Zealand.  These programs are over the Christmas school holiday period.

The program also allows people in our communities to have the pleasure of hosting a student from these countries in the period July to August.

This year five students from our district took the opportunity to travel overseas. Alice Engstrom from Echuca chose the Netherlands and Belguim, Jessica Cail from Rochester to Canada, Coby Ferguson from Yarrawonga to Germany, Hayley Prigg from Rochester to Brazil and Georgia Ginnivan from Wodonga to Canada.

These young ladies, with their parents, attended an orientation day at Wangaratta in October and learnt all the requirements of the program and I am sure like previous years we will have five wonderful
ambassadors for their parents, country and Lions who will return with some wonderful stories of their experiences.

Give some young person in your area the opportunity to experience
another culture.

TRY IT – YOU WILL LIKE IT.
