District Governor's Message

DG Les Harrison

District Governor 2008 - 2009 Lion Les Harrison from Tungamah Lions Club

First of all, a big thank you to Hedley and Lyn for the wonderful job they have done over the past twelve months. Hedley has made this year a very hard act to follow.

Despite all our training, I certainly didn’t expect the enormity of the times in Darwin and Bangkok.

It is only then that you begin to realise the truly wonderful job that Lions do throughout the world.

International President Al Brandel and his wife Maureen are certainly inspirational people who have contributed just so much for the benefit of mankind, and I am sure they will use their position wisely for the benefit of all. Their motto is “Miracles Through Service.”

Campaign Sight First II has been an outstanding success and it is a feat for us all to be proud of. Yes, we did reach the target of $US200 million! That equates to 28.5 million people whose eyesight has either been restored or saved. To me, that represents a miracle of gigantic proportions, and that reflects great credit on every Lion.

Robyn and I are looking forward to meeting each and every one of you during the year. My motto for the year is “Lions- Responding To Challenge.” We are facing huge challenges with our terrible drought, but that only emphasises just how we must continue not only to survive, but grow to support each other.

We have a wonderful District, with many wonderful Lions. We have much to be proud of. I would dearly love to see a marked decrease in the numbers leaving us. Our MERL team is ready to go to help all clubs remain healthy clubs where people want to belong. Please use them. These people are wonderful Lions who care for you.

Working with District Governors from all over the world breaks down all barriers. It is really a very humbling experience to work with these great human beings.

To our Cabinet, thank you for being a part of the team. To the outgoing Cabinet, thank you for the wonderful job you have done.
To my own club at Tungamah, thank you for fostering an interest in Lionism and encouraging me to take this momentous step.

Please remember that I am here to serve you. Do not hesitate to call. If I am not home, I’ll get back to you.
Have a wonderful year.

DG Les Harrison and Lion Robyn.
