Junior Public Speaking

Junior Public Speaking District Final

About one hundred people attended the District Final of the Junior Public speaking held at Tongala on Sunday 18th September. The crowd was treated to some great displays of Public Speaking ability from ten very talented young people.

Years 3-4 students told us about their favourite holiday, real or imagined. We were taken to a variety of places around Australia and the world. The winner was Lynton Hoey from Strathmerton.

Years 5-6 students took us back in time with a live news report of an event in Australia’s history. Some of the events did not seem to be history to many of the adults in the audience. However each event had to be pre 2000 so they were history to the students. Each contestant in this group also had to tell us about a gift they would like to give to a friend. Matthew Forrest from Corowa won this division.

Judges, PDG John Beale, PDG Neil Campbell and Ms Sue Radywonik, had a very difficult job to do. They followed the guidelines and they all agreed on each of the winners. The winning trophies and certificates and participation certificates were presented by District Governor Brenda Henderson.

Sue Radywonik was recognised as the teacher who first put forward to Lions, the concept of the competition. She has been a driving force to get the competition established. Sue feels that the competition is achieving the aims we set out to accomplish in the beginning.

Tongala Lions organised a great venue and an even better afternoon tea for all contestants and audience.

The completion is growing each year with thirty clubs being involved this year. Once a club or a school has been involved in the competition, they realise the value of the competition and continue to be involved each year.

The project has two aims

1. To encourage the development of public speaking skills in Primary School students by encouraging as many as possible to research, organise and present a speech on a set topic, and

2. To further develop the skills of students with talent in this field by exposing them to different audiences and situations. Four of the finalists will speak at the District Convention in October.
