About Us

The Lions Cord Blood Foundation Inc. was initiated in 1996 by Lion Laurie Denton (deceased) a former member of the Lions Club of Waverley Inc. Managed by the Lions Club of Waverley Inc. V5. A District Project of 201V5 and since the Multiple District Convention in Queensland in 2006 and again in Melbourne 2009 the Foundation continues as a Category B Project until June 2012.

Aims of the Foundation

To supply the cryonic chambers for the storage of collected stem cell packages.
Assist with equipment when requested by the Royal Children's Hospital (Melbourne), the Box Hill Hospital in Box Hill and the William Angliss Hospital in Ferntree Gully (suburbs of Melbourne).

The Foundation raises funds and awareness through guest speaking, The Lion magazine, District Newsletter articles, requests for disbursements from Lions & Lioness Clubs in the District of 201V5, all participating V Districts and Lions and Lioness Clubs throughout Australia.

Participating Lions Clubs throughout these Districts raise funds by organising events within their clubs.

In 2005 through to 2011 and again this year the Foundation run a very successful GROCERY GRAB with Lions/Lioness Clubs from all over Australia participating in conjunction with their local supermarket.

The upcoming 2012 Grocery Grab will be held between the 1st September and the 5th October. With the draw on or after the 6th of October. Each year the Grocery Grab will be held from the first Saturday in September and the first Friday in October.

The cost of retrieval, testing and storage of a single successful cord is $1500+.

Recent allocations made to the Bone Marrow Donor Institute (BMDI), Cord Blood Bank during 2012 have been for the further purchase of two Cryoshippers & Cryoshipper Data Loggers ($5,700.00 +GST). Full funding for 2012 of Cord Blood Research Grant to fund researcher ($110,00.00 pa). Testing of HLA-C tissue typing for 500 cords ($35,000)

To March 2012 the Foundation has raised in excess of $1,000.000.00 for the Bone Marrow Donor Institute, Cord Blood Bank and shall continue to support the BMDI through 2012 and beyond.
