Project Overview
Tune In - Not Out, an initiative of the Drug Education Network and the Australian Lions Drug Awareness Foundation, is a national podcast service created not just for young people but by young people aged 16 - 25. The projects´ ultimate aim is to assist them in making safe decisions around the use of alcohol and other drugs. However the podcast topics, which will be chosen by the target group, can be broad in focus as they seek to answer the statement: "what information and skills do you and your peers need to live a safe and healthy life?"

The podcast site will ´go live´ in June 2008 - however the project is currently undertaking the powerful process of community development by creating ´Real Life´ projects that enable young people aged 16 - 25 to work within their communities to generate the messages they want to hear to live a safe and healthy life.

Operating via a community development framework the service offers a range of ´Real Life´ projects for colleges, TAFE´s universities and community groups to undertake. This process ensures the podcast service which will be launched across Australia is made to the community´s requirements whilst also allowing those involved to gain new skills, information and contacts.

At present the development process is mainly occurring within Tasmania where the project officer is based, however for groups interested in participating in the development of Tune In - Not Out outside of Tasmania the service will work to support these groups to independently undertake a project. The Project Officer is supported by a national advisory group. Contact the Tune In - Not Out team.

´Real Life´ Projects
The range of ´Real Life´ projects on offer include:

A number of these projects can be combined for groups wishing to undertake more than one aspect for example the podcast brief, production and graphics. Click on a project title to find out more about each one.

Researching and Writing Podcast Briefs
This project requires a topic to be researched in order to produce an evidence based podcast brief.
These topics work towards answering the statement
“What do you and yours peers need info and skills on to live a safe and healthy life?”
The design brief will be content not style based. It will cover the key messages to be delivered in the podcast reflecting best practice and harm minimization strategies.
These briefs once signed off by the project´s advisory group will be used in a podcast workshop.

This project offers an opportunity for community groups to design a podcast brief
to carry their specific message aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of young peole and reducing the harms associated with alcohol and other drug use. Once live on the Tune In - Not Out podcast site groups can create links to the podcast for people to access direct from their website.

Marketing
This project is offered with a choice of focus; national, state or localized marketing. The project will require groups to develop a marketing plan for approval by Tune In - Not Out. Once approved, the plan is implemented and the success reviewed.

Podcast Production
Tune In - Not Out has a podcast workshop format that involves all aspects of producing a podcast which will feature on the national podcast site. This workshop includes:

-   Research
-   Sourcing and interviewing experts
-   Writing scripts
-   Recording and producing the content
-   Creating written info to accompany the podcast

Tune In - Not Out will offer a delivery method to suit each group. Groups can either produce their podcast independently or have the project officer facilitate the process.

Graphic Design
Each audio podcast produced also has the ability to be created into a vodcast with visual graphics to accompany the audio information. Groups can work on this real life project to generate the graphics and bring an audio podcast to visual life.

Tune In - Not Out requires a logo which will feature on the podcast site and accompanying literature and marketing material. Working to a design brief a group will submit a selection of logos for the Tune In - Not Out community to select from.

Music Production
This project provides the ideal opportunity for the community to create the intro music that will become the signature piece for each podcast as well as music which can be used for message transition, background etc.

Podcast Site Design and Production
This project requires the planning and development of the Tune In - Not Out podcast site which will house all of the podcasts and accompanying information.

Community Involvement
An aim is that the projects will occur within the young peoples wider community through working in partnership with local businesses, community groups and individuals to develop the service through the sharing of information and skills.

The project is seeking interest from community members who may have skills in: media, sound production, graphics, website, marketing, research as well as topical experts for example alcohol and other drugs, and youth health. Please contact the project officer to discuss further.
