The Children's Cancer Institute Australia and Lions Australia are working in partnership to find a cure for childhood cancer
Childhood cancer is the most common cause of death in children in Australia after accidents. Every year in Australia more than 500 children are diagnosed with cancer.
Today only 7 out of every 10 children diagnosed with cancer will survive their disease.
Treatment often takes several years. It may involve surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Battling cancer is an extremely difficult experience for a child and his or her family.
On behalf of families across Australia facing childhood cancer, we congratulate and thank Lions Australia for your tremendous contribution, through the Lions Cord Blood and Childhood Cancer Appeal to the advancement of medical research into childhood cancer. Your donation of over $2.6 million dollars over nine years has enabled Children's Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA) to carry out world-class research and make progress into understanding and developing better therapies for this devastating group of diseases.
CCIA research highlights over the last nine years supported by Lions Australia include:
- Research carried out in the Lions Cord Blood and Childhood Cancer Research Appeal laboratory into umbilical cord blood (stem cells) has led to the development of significant improvements to the safety and effectiveness of using blood stem cells for transplantation following chemotherapy treatment for leukaemia. The development of a unique laboratory model of leukaemia that is considered one of the best in the world. This model is a relevant representation of how the disease behaves in children and is essential for the ongoing study of leukaemia and testing of new therapies.
- Progress in studies that utilise the patient's own immune system to fight leukaemia with the potential to treat children who have relapsed.
- Understanding the mechanisms that regulate celldivision, cell lifespan and the processes that cause normal cells to become cancerous.
- Understanding of drug resistance in leukaemia treatments with chemotherapeutic drugs and development of strategies to overcome drug resistance.
- Understanding the role of key genes in the development of childhood cancer.
- Development of patented anticancer treatments that target the molecules and genes that cause cancer.
- Development of a sophisticated molecular test that can help predict relapse accurately shortly after treatment for leukaemia commences.
- Understanding the long term risks associated with treatments for childhood cancer.
Looking Forward to the Next Three Years:
CCIA is honoured and delighted that Lions Australia has chosen to continue to support our vital research into childhood cancers. For the next three years your support will be directed to our Molecular Epidemiology program.
Molecular Epidemiology is the study of genes and factors in the environment that determine the risk of developing disease, as well as the survival rates of those treated for disease. Researchers in the Molecular Epidemiology Group at CCIA are using cord blood in their studies aimed at identifying and explaining the factors that cause childhood cancer and affect the long term health of children treated for cancer.
Our groups work in close collaboration with children's cancer researchers, and specialists at institutions, universities, and Children's hospitals in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, ACT and Western Australia, as well as internationally.
Less than five percent of all childhood cancers are hereditary and the causes of childhood cancers remain largely a mystery. As a supporter of our Molecular Epidemiology Group, Lions Australia will be contributing to:
- Investigations to determine whether delayed exposure to early childhood infections or an abnormal immune response to infection places children at risk of developing acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (the most common childhood cancer);
-
Analysis of the genetic changes that might contribute to the development of tumours of the central nervous system and how these changes may effect survival rates following treatment;
- A study of 1200 childhood cancer survivors who were treated at Sydney Children’s Hospital over a thirty year period to determine how genes and other factors influence the long-term health outcomes of children who have been successfully treated with anticancer drugs.

This annual event gives Clubs across the country the opportunity to support Children's Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA) in its research into the causes and prevention of, and to find a cure for, childhood cancer, because "Lions believe that every child deserves the chance to grow up".
The Lions Biggest BBQ is a great way to promote Lions Australia and to raise awareness in your community.
This year again, thanks to our very generous sponsor, Barbeques Galore, your Club had the chance to win one of six state-of-the-art 4 Burner BBQs complete with 9 kg gas bottle (value around $700).

Included in this wonderful total is almost $100,000.00 raised by the Lions Biggest BBQ 2009 to date.
