On Friday the 25th of November, the Lions Club of Moreton Bay Inc. held their annual Carols by Torchlight. Sinead Butler, Zac Green, and Sarah Sadler all members of the Leo Club of Wynnum State High School dressed up as elves and were Santa's helpers on the night. They gave out bags of lollies to all the kids that weren't able to see Santa straight away. The kiddies had a wonderful time, and the Leos thoroughly enjoyed themselves helping out at the Carols.

A mention should also go out to the Leo Club of Bayside, who also attended the night selling Glowsticks. By the number of illuminated children that night, the Club would have raised a tidy sum from the sale of theGlowsticks. A big congratulations to the Bayside Leos for a fantastic fundraising effort, and a big thankyou to the Wynnum High Leos. The night would not have been as colourful and animated without the help of both of the Leo Clubs.

June is Leo Environment Month

The purpose of a Leo environment project is to encourage club members to become stewards of the Earth. Since Leo clubs exist all over the world, Leos can make a difference in caring for the planet.  Leos can address the environment problems that affect their own communities.

For environment project ideas, consult the Leo publication, "Our Environment, Our Future" (IAD-302).

Upon completion of an environment project, apply for the Leo Environmental Project Banner Patch Award, (if your club has not already received this award). The award application can be submitted online.

Alpha and Omega Leo Clubs

All Leo clubs will be asked to declare themselves as either Alpha or Omega Leo clubs. Members of Alpha Leo clubs are between the ages of 12 and the legal age of majority in their country. Omega Leo club members are between the legal age of majority in their country and age 28. All other requirements for Leo club membership are identical.

After completing the declaration (which is due at the Youth Programs Department at international headquarters by December 16), age-appropriate materials will be mailed in the  Leo Club President/Secretary kits.

Change in Leo Constitution

The declaration of every Leo club as either an Alpha or an Omega Leo club created a change in the Standard Leo Club Constitution. Click here for a copy of the new constitution.

New Partnership

Lions Clubs International signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding with Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY). Since its inception in 1958, the non-profit volunteer organization has invited 285,000 young people from around the world to participate in its leadership training programs.

Lions can support HOBY programs in their community. In addition, Lions can assist HOBY "Ambassadors" as they attempt to complete 100 hours of volunteer community service. Lions can also invite HOBY Ambassadors to become Leo club members. For more information, visit www.hoby.org.

Leo Awareness Month

April has been designated as Leo Awareness Month. Leos are encouraged to create a special service project during this month. A "high-visibility" project such as a clean-up campaign will publicize the service initiative of Leos to the community. A two-page article about Leo Awareness Month will appear in the headquarters edition of the April/May issue of THE LION Magazine.

National Youth Service Day (www.gysd.net) in the US and Global Youth Service Day (www.ysa.org). The designated days provide an opportunity to work with other volunteer organizations to create a community-wide service project.

Leo-to-Lion Transition

When Alpha Leos reach the legal age of majority in their county and Omega Leos reach age 28, they can continue to serve their communities as Lions club members. The following programs provide for an easy transition from a Leo club member to a Lions club member.

Leo Years of Service Transfer Program

Former Leos can complete the Leo Years of Service Record to receive credit for their Leo years of service in their Lions club membership history. The Lions club secretary submits the form to the Youth Programs Department at International Headquarters.

Leo Completion of Service Certificate Guidelines

Leos in good standing can receive a Leo Completion of Service Certificate. The certificate waives the US$25 Lions club new member fee or the US$30 Lions club charter member fee for former Leos. Sponsoring Lions club presidents, secretaries or Leo club advisors can request the certificate on behalf of the Leo. The free certificate is available from the Youth Programs Department at International Headquarters.

Leo Lions Club

Leos can form their own Lions club and keep the term "Leo" in their club name.  A Leo Lions club can be started with 20 or more members. For more information, contact the Membership and Extension Division at International Headquarters.

New Century Lions Club

Created for young adults up to the age of 35, New Century Lions Clubs have all the same Lions club rights, privileges, and responsibilities. New Century Lions have more flexibility in club operations and fewer administrative reporting requirements.

For more information, contact the Lions Membership and Extension Division at International Headquarters.

Special Leo Tab

Former Leo members can purchase a Leo tab to wear with their Lions pin. The tab is available in the Lions Club Supplies Catalog.
