Christchurch Earthquake

Lions Family,

The news channels are bringing the news on the latest scenes from Christchurch New Zealand following the terrible earthquake. There has been extensive damage and loss of life. LCIF has approved an Emergency Grant of US$10,000 to immediately assist New Zealand Lions with their relief and recovery efforts.

Australian Lions will naturally wish to help our New Zealand Lions relief efforts in Christchurch in the coming weeks and months. Yesterday's earthquake was the second within 6 months to hit the area. Unfortunately, authorities predict there will be several after-shocks that will cause more damage.

Lions Clubs in Australia wishing to help can send their donation cheques in Australian dollars made out to 'LCI/LCIF New Zealand Earthquake 2011 Relief Fund' to their District Treasurer who will bank the funds to LCIF.

Every dollar and cent given to your Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) goes into grants for Lions to help people in need.

Your Cabinet Secreatry and LCIF District Co-ordinator will keep you informed of developments.

CYCLONE and FLOOD APPEALS

Following their recent $200K offer to assist flood victims, Australia's own Australian Lions Foundation (ALF) has quickly stepped in to assist clubs in relief and recovery work following Cyclone Yasi.

The Foundation has set aside an initial $40,000 and invites clubs to contribute to these funds for distribution to the affected areas.

Australian Lions Foundation supporting Districts

Since our first Message regarding support for flood victims in NSW and Qld, other parts of Australia are also now suffering inundation and damage from floods – homes and properties in Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia are being impacted. In addition, a considerable volume of water is flowing down the Murray River and will cause some havoc on its way to and in South Australia.

Clubs are asked to assist in raising funds so they can be available to purchase much needed goods when required.

Cheques should be made payable to their District and sent to their District Treasurer.

When sending your donations to your District Treasurer, the accompanying note should indicate the ultimate destination for your funds, eg "NSW/Qld Flood Relief"; "Vic Flood Relief"; "Tas Flood Relief"; "WA Flood Relief"; or even "General Flood Relief".

Funds will be dissected into appropriate accounts so that the money will be granted to the correct areas in due course by the Australian Lions Foundation.
