Spinal Cord Program
Page 1

A NEW CENTURY - A NEW MILLENNIUM
- A NEW CHALLENGE STATEMENT:

"Scientists at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre are ready to start a human treatment protocol that can reverse nerve and brain damage. caused by Spinal Cord injury, Epilepsy and Parkinson's disease. Treatment Involves removal & regeneration of carefully targeted brain cells, which are reintroduced into the Patient, where growth continues and the brain is repaired."

SPINAL CORD SOCIETY:

The Spinal Cord Society is an International Organization that has devoted 20 years of its existence to finding a CURE for spinal cord injury. Its programme is directed by those with this injury, and its resources aimed solely at selected targeted research undertaken on a contract basis - does not own property.

Through the efforts of its research, it is now on the threshold of providing THAT CURE. Specially grown stem cells are to be used in the first human treatments during the period of this year.

The process consists of stem cells, harvested from the Patient, being treated in the Laboratory and prepared for injection back Into the site of the spinal cord injury. in combination with nerve growth substances and an Intensive physiotherapy programmes, it is expected that signs of spinal cord recovery will be seen as early as 3 months after treatment.

The Australian Spinal Cord Society has established Fellowships to send Australian Scientists and Clinicians to the USA for up to 2 years, to learn the very latest techniques. Upon their return, to Australia, a committed period of 2 years will be provided, in order that the techniques and knowledge can be made available to the Australian Public afflicted with spinal cord Injury.

It is envisaged that other nervous disorders e.g. Epilepsy, Parkinson's disease & stroke will also benefit.

On June the 8th, 2000, the Spinal Cord Society was advised by doctors at the Cedars-Sinal Medical Centre in Los Angeles California,

that the human trials in Parkinsonism there, supported by the Spinal Cord Society and development, have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the U.S. Government. These trials will get underway during the next few months.

A final application will soon be made for human trials in chronic spinal cord injury using the same autologous cell treatment.

Human trials will also begin in Estonia early in the fall and the University of Alabama a little later for both Parkinsonism and chronic spinal cord injury."

This is truly great news for persons suffering from Parkinsonism and those with spinal cord injury.

Please all Lions, give this project your consideration.
