2007 Youth of the Year
National Tour in WA

The
National and State
winners of the Lions
Youth of the Year Quest
arrived in Perth for the
WA leg of their National
Tour on the 6th
of January. This year we
had five youthful
travellers instead of
six. Elizabeth Forsyth
from Tasmania left the
tour after the Tasmanian
leg to travel to
Holland, where she will
represent our Federal
Government as a Junior
Ambassador to The Hague,
this was such a
wonderful opportunity
for Elizabeth and we
know that she will make
us proud.
Joshua Moorman
(Queensland), Nathaniel
Ware (NSW), Zoe Keys
(South Australia),
Thomas Williams (Western
Australia) and our
national winner Shane
Robertson from Victoria
continued on with the
tour.
After
meeting their host
families at Perth
Airport and taking a
quick trip along the
Swan River, they
gathered at the home of
Inglewood President
Keith Cooke for a
welcome barbecue. (Our
thanks go to Mondo
Butchers in Inglewood
for their support of
this function.)
The
next day they travelled
to Mandurah as the
guests of Lions Club of
Mandurah and the
Mandurah Leos Club. Lion
John Walker and his
lovely wife Kate made
their Halls Head home
available to us once
again. The highlight of
the day was their tour
of the canals and the
Mandurah Estuary on
Lions John’s boat and
the great seafood lunch.
They travelled back to
Perth in the late
afternoon for some sight
seeing and photo
opportunities in Kings
Park before enjoying a
night off.
On
Monday they visited the
National Australia Bank
to say thank you to our
National Sponsors and
after a great morning
tea they went to the
revolving C Restaurant
on the 33rd
floor of St Martins
Tower, to see the great
views of the Perth
Skyline. After some
shopping and sight
seeing in the city they
travelled down river to
the City of Fremantle
for some more shopping,
sightseeing and a visit
to the Maritime Museum.
An early evening tour of
the Old Fremantle Goal,
ghosts and all, was
enjoyed as was dinner at
Cicerellos They finished
the day by watching the
sun set over the ocean
from the old Bather’s
Beach in Fremantle.
The
whole of Tuesday was
devoted to enjoying
Rottnest Island, bicycle
riding, swimming and the
delights of the island’s
bakery were truly
appreciated by all.
Keith
Cooke, the host club
president, rode with the
YOTY all over the island
(Bravo Keith) while Lion
Peter (the Bag Man)and I
manned the base camp.
Our thanks go to The
Lions Club Canning City
for their sponsorship of
the bike hire and to the
Hillarys Fast Ferry
Service for the discount
on fares that they
provided. A quiet night
with host families and
some time to pack was
much needed.
The
YOTY enjoyed their stay
and have taken many
wonderful memories away
with them as they moved
on to Darwin and the
rest of their tour. It
was a pleasure to get to
know a little more about
them and their
aspirations during their
short stay and I know we
will hear great things
about them in the future
